The BMW X5 M Lets You Haul Groceries at Warp Speed

Ever wanted to get your kids to soccer practice at Mach 1? Or have you ever wanted to be the talk of the neighborhood book club? If so, the 2020 BMW X5 M might be worth looking into. With 617 horsepower, the X5 M stands out in a growingly competitive field of high performance SUVs. Going toe to toe with the Ford Explorer ST, Mercedes-Benz GLE AMG, and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. A lowered chassis and standard AWD also make the performance makeover complete, as well as various sport upgrades to take your children to the daycare faster than ever.

What’s Inside and How Does She Perform?

Powered by a 600 horsepower twin turbo 4.4 liter V8 bred for the Autobahn, the X5 M will do a 0-60 run in 3.7 seconds, but can be slashed to 3.6 with the 617 horsepower Competition Series. Paired with a 8-speed automatic transmission with a 7500 redline makes the SUV a blast to drive. Upgraded exhaust pipes, a sturdier and shorter strut tower, catchy and larger brakes, along with a slew of other performance upgrades will have you wondering why anyone would ever buy a M4 CS. To strengthen the frame, M engineers developed a dynamic front anti-roll bar, adaptive dampers, and massive Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires. Driving it feels a little bit floaty at first, but crashing the throttle lets you feel that pinned back in your seat acceleration. Twisty roads do take some faith, as the ride height and its power doesn’t really make much physics sense. Quick handling, and the DCT allows for sporty and swift shifts from the paddles. As with all M cars, it comes with two custom M modes and a Track setting to add to the barrage of vehicle settings. As the cherry on top the X5M offers a gas guzzling 13/18 MPG city and highway.

Inside and Out

To add to the exterior carbon trims and sporty pieces, the interior is keeping par with the BMW standard. The interior is super nice, the M badge embossed on the seats along with a huge touchscreen for comfort. All of BMW’s top features come standard including heated and massaging seats, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and full leather for the front and back seats. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are included, as well as custom settings for each piece of the vehicle. Cargo space is okay, nothing crazy at 34 cubic feet, and is subpar for a vehicle this size, but when you buy this, you should be expecting performance over anything.

The Verdict

The X5 M stands out heavily in a densely packed field. This X5 actually doesn’t try to pretend it’s a performance vehicle, it actually is. With SUVs growing more popular, the X5 M is a great jumping off point for the rise of performance SUVs.

OVERALL: 8/10

EXTERIOR: 6/10
